The expression “personal development” has entered our vocabulary and, I wonder, if we are aware of what we say when we use it, if we have the notion that we cannot, strictly speaking, do a good job with others if we do not do it with ourselves , that it is not honest to hand over possibilities for growth if, within ourselves, we have not already done so or are not doing so.
I traveled to the most famous aphorism in history: “know thyself”. It was found in the porch of the entrance to the temple of the god Apollo, in the city of Delphi in Greece, in the sec. IV BC What is revealed in it is the belief that the importance of self-knowledge is very high, the ability to find, in one lifetime, the truth about ourselves, about what we are and about what we want to be, an enormous job for anyone who intends to develop- if, improve and find the truths that, no matter how much life changes, can adjust to all the contingencies that we are experiencing.
Within what is said to be “personal development”, and given the vastness of the expression itself, I presume that one can find an attempt at self-knowledge, a slow construction of capacities that allow us to look beyond what seems, to be attentive to what happens when no one is watching, when no one tells us what to do, when only we make an appointment with ourselves, in a kind of intimate dinner, with the candles of conscience lit and with the possibility of lighting those that remain unlit.
In fact, we know that developing means unfolding, unfolding, growing, explaining, expanding, progressing, increasing, extending. I wonder if, when we use the expression “personal development”, we are aware of this undertaking, this complex and continuous work, this way of looking inwards that demands, of me, much more than reading a few books or enrollment in some courses. Because growing up, or unfolding possibilities, or explaining to myself how I want to live, or increasing my capabilities in order to progress and expand paths, is much more than what fits in the expression, it's as if I were, while swimming in a 25 meter pool, managing to increase the space that the water occupies and managing to reach a place that, not knowing where it is yet, I imagine possible.
